TLDR

  • A Malaysian woman, Norain, shared her experience of being accused of dining and dashing at a restaurant in Indonesia after her trip.
  • They were able to prove payment through a receipt and bank transaction, leading the restaurant to admit it was a misunderstanding and issue both a personal and public apology.
  • Norain advised the public to always keep their receipts as proof of payment to avoid similar situations.

Most of us probably don’t think twice about tossing away receipts after making a purchase. Once the payment is made and the item is in hand, that tiny slip of paper usually ends up crumpled in a bag, forgotten in a wallet, or thrown straight into the bin. But one Malaysian woman is raising awareness about keeping receipts after an unfortunate incident happened to her.

In a post on Threads, the woman, known as Norain, shared that she and her group had gone to Restoran Pagi Sore in Indonesia on 13 May. She revealed that they had ordered a total of nine dishes for six people, which cost IDR907,500 (about RM204).

After enjoying their meal, Norain and her group continued on to Bandung as part of their itinerary. What was supposed to be a straightforward vacation turned into an unforgettable ordeal when the group was accused of dining and dashing by the restaurant three days later.

The receipts that prove otherwise

According to Norain, on 16 May, the group became aware of the accusation when their tour driver suddenly asked for the restaurant payment receipt.

“The driver said the restaurant management had publicly accused us of not paying for our meals three days ago. Obviously, we were upset because we’re sure we had paid. We did joke about leaving one by one and letting one of our friends pay for everything, but we didn’t actually do that.”

The group then began searching high and low for the receipts. At the same time, they took screenshots of the successful bank transaction and submitted them to their travel agent as initial proof of payment.

Fortunately, the receipt was eventually located, and the restaurant admitted it was a “misunderstanding,” issuing both a personal and public apology.

Despite the situation being resolved, Norain remained upset about being publicly accused, especially since the incident occurred three days after they had dined there.

“The question is, why did they target us, and how can they simply accuse us after three days? What was the real motive?”

In the end, Norain said she may not return to the restaurant in the future and hopes her post will serve as a reminder for others to always keep their receipts.

The incident also sparked strong reactions online, with some netizens calling for a boycott of the restaurant. Others went further, urging Norain to consider pursuing legal action over the public accusation.
