The Penang Social Welfare Department (JKM) has initiated a preliminary inquiry into claims that a father may have exploited his two young sons for social media content on TikTok.

According to Lim Siew Khim, Chairperson of the State Committee for Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Affairs, JKM has interviewed the father, who is well-known online, and reached out to his former spouse, the children’s mother, for further information.

“A report was lodged via the Talian Kasih hotline at 9:30am on September 2, alleging that two boys, aged five and one, were being excessively featured in TikTok videos to generate income."

"This included activities such as producing content, soliciting viewer gifts, conducting paid reviews, and participating in fan meet-ups,” Lim said when contacted.

The father has denied the accusations, claiming they stem from a misunderstanding and asserting that his children’s appearances were casual and voluntary.

JKM’s initial findings did not uncover compelling evidence of coercion or exploitation for financial gain. However, the department has issued guidance to the father, urging him to ensure that any involvement by the children remains age-appropriate and voluntary.

He was also advised to limit filming to avoid disrupting their rest, education, and emotional health, and to protect their privacy.

Lim emphasised that the father must act in accordance with the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), prioritising the well-being of his children. JKM will continue monitoring the situation.

Earlier media reports revealed that the 33-year-old man was summoned to the Barat Daya JKM office in Balik Pulau to provide a statement. Allegations included forcing his children to participate in live sessions, treating them harshly, and pressuring them to engage with followers for monetary gain.
