(REVIEW) Fennel & Co. Debuts Its First Ramadan Buffet With a Focus on Malaysian Comfort Food

Fennelft

TLDR

  • Fennel & Co. introduces its “Ramadhan Stories” Ramadan buffet, featuring a menu focused on familiar Malaysian flavours without an overwhelming number of choices.
  • The main spread includes traditional dishes such as Asam Pedas Barramundi and Lemak Cili Padi Telur Itik, along with rotisserie selections and Western touches like Chicken Tikka and pasta.
  • The dessert and drinks section highlights local kuih and classic beverages such as teh tarik and sirap bandung that are kaw, making it a fitting choice for a relaxed and enjoyable iftar experience.

With “Ramadhan Stories at Fennel & Co.,” the restaurant makes its debut into the Ramadan buffet landscape with a clear sense of direction.

It’s not trying to overwhelm diners with dozens of stations or elaborate displays, instead, Fennel & Co. sticks to a focused lineup built around familiar, time‑tested Malaysian flavours. Here’s what diners can look forward to:

A familiar start

The appetiser spread sets the tone with a straightforward selection: dates, Pai Tee, Rojak Buah, Gado-Gado, Cucur Bawang, lemang with chicken rendang, serunding ayam, and an array of sambals. It’s the kind of opening that most diners will appreciate, nothing experimental, just familiar items done properly.

For something warm, the Bubur Lambuk Daging is easily the highlight. It’s thick, flavourful, and seasoned well. Soto Ayam and Curry Laksa offer reliable, classic options for those who prefer starting with soup or noodles.

Mains that hit the right notes

The main dishes stick closely to Malaysian comfort food, and several standouts carry the buffet. The Asam Pedas Barramundi has the right level of sourness and heat, while the Lemak Cili Padi Telur Itik is rich without being overwhelming. The Nasi Minyak Diraja ties everything together nicely, though basmathi white rice is available for those who prefer something simpler.

Other familiar dishes like Sambal Paru, Kerabu Daging Salai, Dalca Sayur, Mee Goreng, Mix Vege with Egg Tofu, and Daging Kicap Potato round out the warm section. The overall selection isn’t huge, but it’s varied enough to keep most diners satisfied.

Touches of modern variety

To balance the traditional offerings, the rotisserie counter includes roast lamb, roast chicken, Chicken Tikka, roasted vegetables, potatoes, and two sauces. Everything here is straightforward, and the roast lamb in particular is well-executed.

Middle Eastern touches such as hummus, pita, and Lebanese bread add a small but welcome bit of variety. The pasta section which includes Carbonara, Aglio Olio, and Chicken Lasagna, offers something for children or diners who prefer Western options.

Desserts and drinks kept simple

The dessert section focuses on local favourites: cekodok pisang, kuih-muih, curry puffs, Pisang Goreng, agar-agar, Bubur Jagung & Sago, and Ice Kacang. There’s also a chocolate cake with vanilla cream and seasonal fruits. It’s a simple but sufficient lineup, consistent with the buffet’s overall theme of familiarity.

Drinks include kopi, teh tarik, sirap bandung, ice lemon tea, and infused water, again, nothing fancy, but dependable. What stood out, though, were the teh tarik and sirap bandung, both of which were pleasantly kaw without being overly sweet. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a difference, especially at buffets where drinks often end up diluted.

Our verdict

“Ramadhan Stories at Fennel & Co.” is a modest but well-prepared Ramadan buffet. It doesn’t aim to compete with large hotel-style spreads, and that actually plays to its strengths. The menu is focused, the dishes are mostly well-executed, and the experience feels homely rather than hectic.

If your priority is a relaxed, dependable iftar with the familiar flavours Malaysians tend to gravitate toward, Fennel & Co.’s Ramadan buffet is a solid pick. It’s not trying to reinvent the format, by just serving good, reliable food at a reasonable price.
