Last month, Lee Chong Wei announced he’s hanging up his racquet for good.

The news came as a shock to Malaysians, although some fans knew it was coming sooner or later.

Following his retirement, fans and sports punters were left wondering who will be able to fill in for the former #1 badminton champion?

The future may be uncertain, but what’s certain is Muhammad Fazriq Mohamad Razif’s potential of becoming a national badminton star.

Apparently, the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree because Fazriq is the son of one of Malaysia’s badminton legends, Datuk Razif Sidek, one fifth of the prominent Sidek brothers.

15-year-old Fazriq recently won the National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Badminton Championship held in Negri Sembilan, as well as the Under 15 Years Shonai Invitation Championship in Japan.

Fazriq has expressed his dreams of becoming the next Lee Chong Wei in years to come. But to fill in such big shoes, he knew that he has to work very hard for it.

“To achieve a level on par with Chong Wei, I also must also get more experience and reap success after success at the international level,” Fazriq told Bernama.

‘‘It is not easy to become the number one national player at still a young age, I am only 15 years old. I must arrange my schedule as best as possible, and in a period of at least two years I will try to become a national representative at the senior level.”

All the best, Fazriq!
“Maybe, I can become like Chong Wei if I continue to exhibit my best performance at every championship.”

Fazriq has also set his eyes on playing at the Olympics one day, just like his father did.

All the best to this up-and-coming badminton champion! May your aspirations and dreams eventually come true. Who knows, you’ll be the one who brings home the Olympic gold medal one day.
