Genting Highlands Road Charge System to Begin Trials on 2 April, No Fees for Now But Card Tapping Required

TLDR

  • Starting 2 April 2026, a new road charge system will be tested in Genting Highlands, with no fees imposed during the trial phase.
  • All permitted vehicles are required to tap payment cards such as Touch ’n Go, debit, or credit cards to test system functions, including licence plate recognition and payment processing.
  • Full exemptions are granted to public servants serving at specified institutions in Genting Highlands, provided they use the designated LPR lanes.

Motorists heading to Genting Highlands will soon encounter a new road charge system, as trials are set to begin on 2 April, 2026, according to Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd (LCSB), the authorised operator of the Genting Highlands road network.

The trial will be conducted at two primary entry points, Genting Sempah and the Gohtong Jaya roundabout, but no charges will be imposed during this initial testing phase.

No charge, but payment cards must be tapped

While road users will not be required to pay during the trial, all permitted vehicles must still tap their payment cards, including Touch ’n Go, debit, or credit cards, when passing through the gantries.

LCSB said the requirement is necessary to test the system’s functionality, including licence plate recognition (LPR), payment processing, and traffic flow at the entry points.

Motorists must also continue to comply with existing rules governing the use of Genting Highlands roads, as well as any additional requirements introduced to ensure safety and smooth traffic movement.

Preparing for full implementation

According to the road network operator, the trial phase is intended to evaluate the system’s operational readiness ahead of full implementation.

“The trial is intended to test the functionality and smooth operations of the road charge system before its full implementation. It supports LCSB’s commitment to maintaining safe, reliable, and uninterrupted passage for permitted users to Resorts World Genting, surrounding attractions, and the Genting Highlands area,” LCSB said in a statement.

The road charge is not being positioned as a conventional toll, but rather as a vehicle entry charge based on a “user pays” principle. The funds collected are expected to contribute towards the upkeep of Jalan Genting Highlands.

Exemptions for authorised public servants

Separately, a document issued by LCSB outlines exemptions for authorised public servants (APS), in recognition of services rendered by personnel working in Genting Highlands.

Under this policy, eligible public servants may apply for full exemption from road charges for one registered Class 1 vehicle, provided they are currently in service at a recognised agency or institution within Genting Highlands.

Institutions listed include:

  • SK Sri Layang
  • SMK Sri Layang
  • Institut Amiruddin Baki
  • Balai Polis Genting Highlands
  • Balai Polis Gohtong Jaya
  • Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Genting Highlands
  • Klinik Desa Sri Layang
  • Pejabat Daerah Kecil Genting Highlands
  • Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah Bentong
  • Majlis Perbandaran Bentong (Cawangan Genting Highlands)
  • Pejabat Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri Pahang (Cawangan Genting Highlands)
  • Any other government institution identified by the Pahang state government

To qualify for the exemption, registered vehicles must use the designated LPR lanes at the road charge stations to ensure proper identification and validation.

Charges to be imposed later

While pricing details have not yet been announced, the trial signals a clear step towards paid access to Jalan Genting Highlands.

In November 2025, Resorts World Genting confirmed that Genting Malaysia Berhad would soon impose road charges for vehicles entering the area. The Pahang government subsequently stated on 17 November, 2025, that it hoped any charges introduced would take into consideration the interests and welfare of local residents.
