Did You Know That the Malaysian Common Stray Dog Is One of the World’s Rarest Breeds?

TLDR

  • Malaysia’s anjing kampung is actually the Telomian dog breed — an extremely rare breed worldwide that originates from Peninsular Malaysia.
  • The breed was traditionally reared by the Orang Asli as hunting and guard dogs, and is known for its intelligence as well as unique abilities such as climbing tall ladders.
  • Telomians rarely bark, instead producing yodel‑like sounds, and are highly affectionate while remaining alert and reliable as watchdogs.

When it comes to rare animal breeds, we tend to imagine something fancy, animals you’d only ever see on the internet or in movies. But what if we told you that the stray dogs you see outside your home are actually one of those rare breeds?

Yes, the dogs commonly referred to as “anjing biasa” or “anjing kampung” are actually considered one of the rarest dog breeds in the world.

These local dogs belong to a breed called the Telomian. Native to Peninsular Malaysia, the Telomian is considered one of the world’s rarest breeds, as it is almost impossible to find them outside the region.

Anthropologist Dr Orville Elliott was the first non‑Malaysian to document the breed in 1963. He was also responsible for naming it “Telomian”, after the Sungai Telom Valley in Pahang, where he first encountered the dogs.

Telomian dogs have been bred by the Orang Asli for many generations and were traditionally trained as hunters. These dogs were tasked with hunting small vermin, such as snakes, as well as protecting homes, food supplies, and children.

Affectionate but fierce protectors

Telomian dogs typically live between 10 and 15 years. They can grow to between 38cm and 45cm in height and usually weigh between 8kg and 13kg.

Many Telomians share the rare blue‑black tongue trait commonly seen in Chow Chows. In addition, they are exceptionally intelligent and quick learners. As Orang Asli communities traditionally lived in raised houses to avoid dangerous animals on the jungle floor, Telomians adapted accordingly and are capable of climbing ladders as tall as eight feet.

This breed is also blessed with unusually mobile paws, allowing many of the dogs to hold objects and even open doors.

Another interesting fact about Telomians is that they rarely bark, instead producing howls or yodel‑like sounds. Some dog trainers and experts believe this unique vocalisation may offer a missing link between the Basenji and the Dingo, two breeds suspected to be related, although this theory has yet to be proven.

While Telomians are known to be an affectionate breed, they also make excellent watchdogs. Although they can be friendly with children, Telomians have a high prey drive, so caution is advised when introducing them to smaller pets.
