Astro Teams Up with Authorities to Protect M'sian Families from Cyber Threats Linked to Illegal Streaming Devices

Malaysians love their entertainment, but there’s a growing threat lurking behind those cheap illegal streaming devices (ISDs) that promise endless shows and movies. It’s not just about breaking copyright laws anymore as these devices could put your family’s privacy and safety at risk.

A recent study revealed that almost every ISD app is loaded with malware, spyware, or other harmful software. These apps often ask for way too many permissions like access to your system files, network, and even your camera and microphone. That means they could record your conversations, steal your passwords, and monitor what’s happening in your home. Scary, right?

Astro, together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN), is stepping up efforts to fight this problem. Since 2021, authorities have carried out 52 raids, seized 508 ISD boxes, and charged 33 individuals under the Copyright Act.

Courts have already imposed fines totaling RM656,500, and more cases are still ongoing.

Here’s how enforcement has ramped up over the years:

  • 2021: 4 raids, RM59,500 in fines
  • 2022: 6 raids, RM132,000 in fines
  • 2023: 9 raids, RM97,000 in fines
  • 2024: 13 raids, RM238,000 in fines
  • 2025 (up to October): 20 raids, RM130,000 in fines

Astro isn’t stopping at criminal cases, they’ve also taken civil action against companies selling ISDs. So far, 15 lawsuits have been filed, with damages awarded in several cases to fund more enforcement and awareness campaigns.
