M’sian Criticises Boss Over Sarcastic Reply to Them Taking MC, Others Share Similar Experiences

Mcft

TLDR

  • A worker was given a two-day MC and later extended it due to a high fever, but their boss criticised them by saying, “You can’t wake up for work, but you can wake up to get an MC.”
  • The boss’s comment sparked outrage among netizens, many of whom shared their own experiences dealing with employers who lacked understanding when it came to medical leave.
  • Many workers said they feel pressured either way, those who fail to obtain an MC are marked as absent, while those who do are accused of being lazy and avoiding work.

One post on Threads has since sparked a heated debate among Malaysians after a boss had something to say about an employee taking sick leave.

According to the user, the incident involved another worker who had been given a two-day MC by a doctor. However, as the employee was still running a high fever, they returned to the clinic and were issued an additional two-day MC.

What caught the attention of other Malaysians, however, was the boss’s comment on the matter.

“Cannot wake up to work, but can wake up to get MC.”

Reasonable or too much?

Needless to say, the remark sparked heavy backlash from other social media users. Meanwhile, others took to the platform to share similar experiences of their own.

“My ex-manager once said, ‘Why didn’t you inform me earlier — like last week — if you wanted to take MC?’

"I berated the manager right there and then. The thing is, I took MC on a Monday. They told me I should have informed them the previous Friday, as if I would have known I’d be sick on Monday. If that were the case, I should’ve just applied for annual leave instead. The manager had no reply," said a user.

Another shared, “I had a similar experience during my housemanship. The specialist said that anyone who wanted to apply for MC needed to come to the hospital to see them. So when I did exactly that, the specialist said: ‘Since you have the energy to come here, you can work.’ MC rejected. I still remember it to this day.”

“If you’re sick and don’t get an MC, you’ll be counted as absent. But when you do have an MC, they’ll say you’re too lazy to work. It’s truly a no-win situation.”

One user said, “I recently had a miscarriage and was given a three-day MC by the doctor. I was mocked endlessly because the miscarriage happened close to Raya, so people claimed I was just extending my Raya holiday.”
