According to Vice news, Alexandre Bissonnette has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder in relation to the shooting at the Quebec City mosque.
The incident took place at Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec on Sunday night where the suspect opened fire during evening prayers. Six people were killed and another 19 were injured. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called this a "terrorist attack" and police are saying it is a "lone wolf situation". His motives have not been revealed by the police at this point.
What do we know about Alexandre Bissonnette, the shooter?
1. He's a 27-year-old student of Université Laval
Alexandre studied in the faculty of social sciences and lived 15 minutes away from the mosque that he attacked in the suburban neighbourhood of Cap-Rouge.
2. He has a twin brother
Both of them attended the university and are both members of chess clubs in the Université Laval and Sainte-Foy. A former high school classmate, Simon de Billy, described him as a "nerdy outcast" who was inseperable from his twin brother.
3. He is a Donald Trump supporter
He was identified as an online troll and xeonophobe by François Deschamps, an administrator behind a welcome refugees page that Alexandra frequently commented on. His classmate Jean-Michel Allard-Prus said that "he has right-wing political ideas, pro-Israel, anti-immigration. I had many debates with him about Trump. He was obviously pro-Trump."
4. He was a timid introvert
Multiple reports mention that he was timid, introverted and awkward. He wasn't physically strong or imposing and was often the butt of the joke. He had few friends in high school and was bullied.
5. He turned himself in
According to multiple media outlets, Bissonnette called the police on himself and was arrested at Île d'Orléans Bridge, a distance away from the shooting.
The victims of the shooting have been identified and all of them were fathers. Azzeddine Soufiane was a 57-year-old father of three and a grocer. Khaled Belkacemi, 60, was a professor of soil and agri-food engineering and father of three. Abdelkrim Hassane, 41, was an information technology worker for the government and father of three. Aboubaker Thabti, 44, was a Tunisian-born father of two. Finally, Mamadou Tanou Barry, 42, and Ibrahima Barry, 39, were close friends who had emigrated from Guinea to Canada, leaving behind four and two children respectively.
The attack was one of the deadliest in the city of 500,000 with only two murder cases reported in 2015.
