No matter how old you are, it is important not to take your health for granted because the worst can hit you when you least expect it.

In a recent New Straits Times report, young Malaysians are at risk of getting heart attack, even as young as 37 years old.

This is serious because it would make Malaysia with the youngest age group of those at risk compared to other Asian countries, interventional cardiologist and physician Dr Ahmad Ashraf Z. Anwar said.

One of the symptoms of heart attack is pain in the arm or shoulder.
Of course, this is mainly caused by a person's lifestyle and diet here.

You may not know that, but there are reportedly 25,000 heart attack cases in Malaysia alone every year.

"The youngest that we have treated here was 27 while the oldest was 91," Dr Ahmad said.

But when a heart attack happens, he also shared that time is everything.

"The sooner you get to a hospital, the more treatment options you have," he added.

Prevention is better than cure.
"The best treatment for a heart attack is primary angioplasty for reduced short-term mortality by 34 per cent, reduced stroke by 63 per cent, reduced long-term mortality by 24 per cent and reduced risk of further heart attacks by 51 per cent."

Most of the time, heart attacks come without warning, which is why it is important to prevent the attack before it happens.

For example, regular health screening, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise are the best prevention methods.

Malaysia is not the only country that has people suffering heart attacks because it is also the leading cause of death around the world.

Some of the tell-tale signs of heart attack include pain or discomfort in the chest, jaw, neck or back, shortness of breath, weakness, lightheadedness, and pain or discomfort in the arm or shoulder.

There are also symptoms that are more common among women, namely nausea or vomiting, cold sweart, unusual fatigue, and pressure in the back, jaw, lower chest or upper abdomen.

So let's all be a bit more aware about the health risks in our currently lifestyle and diet.
