It’s every Malaysian’s favourite time of the year again – the durian season.
Street vendors will soon be 'invaded' by Malaysians from all walks of life who will be looking to devour the thorny king of fruits.
However, before you get all excited for your next durian feast, you might have to bear in mind the thorny situation you will soon have with your wallets.
According to several media reports, you’ll likely have to fork out more as durian prices are expected to increase following the high demand for the fruit that’s reportedly exceeding its supply.
The durian supply will most likely decrease by 30% due to the unstable weather, according to reports.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek also noted the issue and admitted that this is probably why the average retail price of Musang King is so expensive nowadays.
Back in 2013, durian sellers were selling the Musang King on an average of RM36.50 per kilogram. Fast forward to 2017, the price has inflated significantly to RM90 per kilogram.
Apart from the popular Musang King, the D24 and Durian Kampung variant have also reportedly shot up.
Yes, reading the price can already give you a heart attack.

Well, the good news is, business for the durian traders are booming thanks to price inflation. The durian industry currently has a value of RM1.2 billion!
“Last year, the export value of durian was RM74 million and we expect that it will increase by a 10 per cent this year,” Ahmad Shabery told the New Straits Times.
If this is the current market value for durian, then we’re off on a journey to make our own durian orchard.
Who knows, we can be durian millionaires soon.
