Awards season has finally begun! The moment we have all been waiting for – the twinkling evening for glitz and glamour to shine on the red carpet and for our favourite actors to be applauded for their astonishing work on screen. Jimmy Fallon helmed the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills on Sunday (this morning Malaysia time). Fallon’s monologue included some political humour, noting that the Globes is “one of the few places left that still honours the popular vote”.
Ryan Gosling, Viola Davis, Tracee Ellis Ross and Atlanta were clear early winners. La La Land being an apparent huge favourite this year, while Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea battled for best drama. History was made when Tracee Ellis Ross won for best actress in a musical or comedy TV series. She became the first black woman to win in that category since Debbie Allen won for Fame in 1983.

The show opened with an elaborate taped song-and-dance number that riffed on the night’s most-nominated film, La La Land, and included plentiful celebrity cameos, setting a fun, carefree tone to what is known as one of Hollywood’s most lighthearted award ceremonies.

La La Land swept the 74th Golden Globe Awards and set a record! The musical film won all seven of the awards for which it received nominations including best motion picture (musical/comedy), best director, best screenplay, best score and acting awards for its stars.

Of course, the Globes also paid tribute to Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, with a video highlighting some of their most unforgettable film roles. Reynolds died a day after Fisher (her daughter) in December.
